FIFA 06, a game based on the 2006 football World Cup by EA games, features 127 teams and players for players to unlock. It also includes a career mode for players to develop their skills. Other options include a FIFA lounge mode, practice matches and penalty shoot-outs. Players can also jump back in time and play classic World Cup games such as England's 1966 match against Germany or the final game of the 1998 tournament.

Fans of the full-blown version can also tinker with formations and strategies, dive into the transfer market and view stats on thousands of real-life players. A variety of add-ons are available, including energy drinks that help players recover from injury faster and a tool for reconfiguing player attributes.

Graphics are a bit dated for this release, but there's a lot of depth to the gameplay. Player animations are excellent, as are the stadiums and the crowd details (which include streamers, balloons and confetti). The announcers' comments are entertaining and informative.

There's also a great selection of music, ranging from the traditional to the trendy. The sound effects are great, too; the crowd roars and the referee blows his whistle at key moments. Despite its age, this is an excellent sports sim that should satisfy any soccer fan. The latest full incarnation is FIFA Online 2, which lets you play against friends and real life players over the internet, but it's not quite as sophisticated as this freeware alternative.
